Why You Should Include Grandparents in Your Next Family Photoshoot
Families come in all shapes and sizes, and a family photo session certainly doesn’t need to be limited to just parents and their kiddos. If grandparents are in town visiting, or you’re lucky enough to have grandparents living nearby, I highly recommend considering a family photo session that includes them! Recently, I was incredibly lucky to be a part of a multi-generational family photoshoot in San Francisco, and it was clear that I was documenting something truly special. Seeing grandparents with their grandchildren offered a unique dynamic, and we caught some amazing giggles, wiggles and plenty of love on camera.
Here are a few reasons why I’m re-writing the rules and encouraging more grandparents to be a part of family photoshoots:
- Including grandparents in a family photoshoot is a great way to keep them involved in their grandchildren’s lives. It can be especially meaningful if they live far away and rely heavily on technology for communication. Booking a family session while they’re visiting provides an opportunity for both making new connections and keeping those connections alive.
- Prints from the session make an amazing gift for everyone involved, and grandparents, parents and children can all easily look back at that special time together. Plus, grannies still love to pull out photos from their wallet and show them off to their friends!
- Family photoshoots are a great gift idea, especially in our society where more emphasis is being placed on experiential gifts rather than material goods. When you’re asked “what would so-and-so like for their birthday,” pointing them towards booking a family photo session is a wonderful gift idea that will keep on giving.
There is something uniquely special about capturing several generations on film – subtle family resemblances and quirks are highlighted, and an abundance of love bursts through every photo. There is no better way to document your family tree for your child than by inviting grandparents into your next family photo session!
